Calculation of normal body mass (BMI)

Your height (cm):Weight, kg):

BMI - body mass index - reflects the state of human health. This indicator depends on the fatty resources of the body and may correspond to the norm, be excessive or deficient. For many people, body mass index is far from optimal. No wonder BMI appeared in medical records as a key risk factor for morbidity and began to be taken into account in the diagnosis.

What is your body mass index?

According to the WHO, half of the people on the planet today are not dying from dangerous infections, as in past eras. The main enemies of man were fast food, overeating, stress, "sedentary" work and "cushioned" leisure.

A whole generation of people suffering from obesity and doomed to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, osteochondrosis and many other dangerous ailments has already grown. The asymptomatic period of these pathologies can drag on for years, during which the strength of the body will slowly but surely undergo. The destructive activity of a hidden disease will also be prevented by an increased body mass index.

In turn, a reduced BMI will signal another deviation from the norm - painful exhaustion of a person. This condition should also be a concern. An organism with an insufficient mass of body fat is not able to cope normally with its functions and resist diseases. Adipose tissue deficiency can be a sign of type 1 diabetes, osteoporosis, digestive disorders, breathing problems or the psyche.

In any case, the body mass index will allow you to catch on time and do restoration of your physical form. Of course, on the path to excellence, you will need to pull yourself together, get rid of bad habits, sacrifice destructive addictions. However, the game is worth the candle, because the most expensive is at stake - your life.

How to calculate body mass index?

To find out this indicator, you need to determine your weight (in kilograms) and measure your height (in meters). Then, the number indicating the weight should be divided by the number obtained by squaring the digital expression of growth. In other words, you need to use the formula that conveys the ratio of body weight to height:

(M - body weight, P - height in meters)

For example, your weight is 64 kg, height - 165 cm, or 1.65 m. Substitute your data in the formula and get: BMI = 64: (1.65 x 1.65) = 26.99. Now you can turn to official medicine for the interpretation of BMI values:

health conditions
Body mass index
18-30 years oldmore than 30 years
Body mass deficiencyless than 19.5less than 20.0
Obesity I degree27,5-29,928,0-30,9
Obesity II degree30,0-34,931,0-35,9
III degree obesity35,0-39,936,0-40,9
IV degree obesity40.0 and above41.0 and above

The author of this formula is the Belgian scientist Adolf Quetelet. True, he was not a physiologist, but a mathematician. Therefore, doctors have several complaints about his formula:

  • it does not take into account the ratio of muscle and fat mass, so BMI will not be able to adequately reflect the state of health of a bodybuilder engaged in building muscle potential: if he calculates the body mass index according to the Ketle formula, and according to the results he will be in the company of loose fat people,
  • these calculations are not suitable for older people: for 60-70-year-old pensioners, somewhat overweight is not considered hazardous to health, so the BMI range for them can be extended from 22 to 26.

If you are not an elderly person or a bodybuilder, then the Quetelet formula will completely cope with the assessment of the balance of your parameters. The magnitude of the error in this case does not hurt to understand whether you are normal or not.

It should be borne in mind that the idea of the medical community about the norm of BMI may change over time. So it was already on the verge of the third millennium, when the BMI recommended by doctors dropped from 27.8 to 25. But Israeli scientists proved that a body mass index of 25-27 is optimal for men: with this index they have the longest life expectancy.

How to calculate body mass index

We welcome all those who have already begun their journey to a healthy lifestyle, and those who are still thinking about how to pack up and stand on it. We hope that this article will be useful for both.

Assessing your weight status may be biased if you do not use tools specifically designed for this purpose.

The body mass index (BMI) is a value that allows you to assess the degree of correspondence of a person’s mass and his height and, thereby, to assess whether the mass is insufficient, normal or excess.

Body mass index is calculated by the formula: I = m / h 2 and measured in kg / m 2.

* m - body weight in kilograms

* h - growth in meters.

For example, a person’s weight = 85 kg, height = 164 cm. Therefore, the body mass index in this case is equal to:

BMI = 85: (1.64 × 1.64) = 31.6 The body mass index was developed by the Belgian sociologist and statistician Adolphe Quetelet in 1869.

In accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the following interpretation of BMI indicators has been developed:

Body mass index is the correspondence between a person’s weight and his height:

16 and less - pronounced deficiency of body weight

16-18.5 insufficient (deficit) body weight

25-30 overweight (obesity)

30-35 1st degree obesity

35–40 obesity of the 2nd degree

40 or more 3rd degree obesity (morbid)

Along with the body mass index, there are many other methods for determining the level of excess weight. So, for example, there are methods for calculating central obesity indices, body volume index, Brock index (the method is applicable only for growth of 155-170 cm. Normal body weight is equal to (height [cm] - 100) - 10 (15%), Breitman index, Bernhard index and many others.

In addition to growth and weight indicators, the method for determining the thickness of the skin fold proposed by Korovin can be used. Using this technique, the thickness of the skin fold in the epigastric region is determined (normally -1.1-1.5 cm). An increase in the thickness of the fold to 2 cm indicates the presence of obesity.

Body mass index is a rough assessment tool that may not be suitable for everyone. For example, an attempt to evaluate the physique of professional athletes with it can give an incorrect result (the high value of the index in this case is explained by developed musculature). At the same time, in women with thin bones and underdeveloped muscles, the body mass index may be normal, but there may be an excess of adipose tissue in the body. BMI can be used in people no younger than 18 years old. BMI should not be used in pregnant women. And for people with moderately developed muscles and normal bone thickness, BMI is the right way to assess whether their weight is a threat to the health of the body as a whole.

Of great importance in the prognosis is the type of obesity. Obesity of the upper half of the body (chest, abdomen, waist) is a great threat to the health of the patient. With an increase in the waist circumference of more than 102 cm in men and more than 88 cm in women and the ratio of the waist to hip circumference of more than 1.0 in men and more than 0.85 in women, the risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke is very high. At the same time, obesity in the lower half of the body (buttocks and thighs) often leads to leg vein diseases.

According to an Israeli study, a body mass index of 25–27 is ideal for men. The average life expectancy of men with such a BMI was maximum.

Especially for you, we offer to buy a convenient roulette calculator. It is equipped with a scale for determining your BMI (you need to combine your weight on one scale with a growth indicator on another, and then in the BMI window you will see which category you belong to), and will also become your assistant in monitoring the change in your volumes, if You have already begun to put effort into this. After all, as practice shows, the process of losing weight at all and at different stages proceeds differently: sometimes kilograms leave, and sometimes the weight can decrease slightly, but at the same time, centimeters in the waist and hips will be strictly reduced. Therefore, for an objective assessment of the dynamics, we recommend keeping a diary, where on a weekly basis it is necessary to record the weight, waist and hips.

Body Weight Rules

  1. It is better to weigh yourself at the same time in the morning on an empty stomach and preferably after the first trip to the toilet.
  2. It is better to take electronic scales, the measurement error of the scales should be no more than +/- 50 grams. For any weight measurement and to determine the ideal weight, use the results of the same weights, then the calculations will be the most reliable
  3. Correctly measure the waist - without clothes or in light underwear, so that the measurement is carried out on the skin.
  4. Measure the waist volume along the navel line. To measure the waist correctly, you need to stand straight, relaxing your stomach and freely lowering your arms along the body. The measuring tape itself must be placed strictly horizontally, without tension. The obtained sizes are noted at the end of a normal exhalation.
  5. To determine the size of your hips, stand straight, heels together, buttocks and legs relaxed, arms down along the torso. Position the centimeter tape strictly horizontally, without tension, around the hips at the level of the most protruding part of the buttocks and measure the hips. Hips should also be measured without clothes.

How do you know what weight is normal for you and how many kilograms do you need to lose?

The European Association of Nutritionists has developed the following recommended body mass formula (RMT):

Men: RMT (kg) = P-100- (P-152) X 0.2

Women: RMT (kg) = P-100- (P-152) X 0.4,

Where P is the growth in cm.

If after calculations you get a figure that seems unattainable to you, do not succumb to despair. After all, your task is not to achieve this result right tomorrow. Ideal Body Mass Index (BMI)

Given the difference in muscle mass between the average man and woman (we do not take athletes into account), the best indicator is:

  • 20-22 for women,
  • 23-25 for men.

The coefficient (number) of the body mass index for men and women is the same, but the program interprets the result in different ways - you get a calculation depending on your gender.

For example, a man with a BMI of 18 and above has nothing to worry about, but women should not reduce their weight to a body mass index of 19 or lower. So for a man with a BMI of 18.5, the program will say that everything is fine, and for a girl with the same body mass index, she will indicate insufficient body weight.

BMI - 18 and less

If you are clearly not eating up, then you should normalize your diet as soon as possible.

Do you think you eat enough? Then you need to visit a doctor as soon as possible and undergo an examination in order to exclude dangerous diseases.

A body mass index of less than 16 is more dangerous to health than 30+.

BMI - 25 and more

Do not get upset and worry about the high body mass index. This indicator is very averaged and is not suitable for everyone. Children and athletes should not be guided by it at all.

Another thing is if the imperfection of your figure is visible to the naked eye. Before starting training and dieting, you should always consult a doctor. Examinations may be needed to make sure that your excess weight is not a consequence of any disease.

And only after making sure that there are no contraindications, you can begin to lose weight.

For those who do not have time to visit doctor J, we can advise you to minimize the consumption of salty, fried and fatty foods, as well as start doing banal exercises. This alone will seriously reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and significantly improve the general condition of the body.

How is body mass index calculated?

You can do it yourself. A simple calculator will simplify this task. Divide your weight in kilograms twice by your height in meters.

An example for a person with a height of 180 cm and a weight of 75 kg.

  1. Height 180cm is 1 meter and 80 centimeters, i.e. 180cm = 1.8m.
  2. 75/1,8 = 41,6
  3. 41,6/1,8 = 23,1
  4. Body mass index is equal 23,1

The author of the method is Adolf Ketle (1869).

Body Mass Index and Army

Growth less than 150 centimeters or body weight less than 45 kg provides the draftee with a one-year delay. If after examination and / or treatment the body weight does not increase, then such a man is exempted from the call.

The right of deferment for half a year is granted to draftees with a body mass ratio of less than 18.5 (aged 18-25 years) and below 19 (for men over 25 years old).
